PULSED LIGHT

Définition

Light is an electromagnetic wave. Its wavelength is measured in nanometres (nm). Each colour has its specific wavelength (violet 400nm, red 800nm). Ultra-violets (UV) are below 400nm and Infra-reds (IR) over 800nm.

When light is emitted with extremely high intensity and in very short pulses, it is known as pulsed light. Pulse duration is a few milliseconds (ms).

Light conveys a quantity of energy via particles known as Photons. This energy is measured in Joules (J).

Technology

Pulsed light is made up of a range of wavelengths (between 300 and 1200nm). It is then filtered so as to reduce the spectrum to match application needs. The light beam is said to be polychromatic (consisting of several colours).

The beam emitted by a laser, on the other hand, has only a single wavelength. It is said to be monochromatic (one single colour). In addition, the laser beam is coherent and focussed, i.e. all waves are in phase and concentrated at a single point.

 

Clinical

 

From a clinical point of view, the Laser is only suitable for one application at a time. Pulsed Light on the other hand has an extensive spectrum and is a technology suited to multiple applications and several skin types.

Pulsed Light is also easier to use than its Laser counterpart and gives identical, if not often better results.

    SPL TECHNOLOGYTM


         SPL or Square Pulse Light Technology represents a breakthrough in the Pulsed Light field. It differs from conventional Pulsed Lights at several levels.

    Conventional Pulsed Lights

    Most Pulsed Lights deliver energy at a peak followed by a sharp drop during a shot which may either be one-off or sequenced (several sub-flashes at each flash). Energy is not therefore consistent throughout the duration of the pulse. Such inconsistency must be compensated for with higher-intensity energy use, with consequent increased risk to skin.
     

    SPL Technology

    Using SPL technology, Yperion systems deliver a single square-shaped pulse which gives consistent energy throughout the firing. The target is therefore heated in a more consistent way, thereby enhancing light ray efficacy. Required energy is reduced and safety significantly increased.

    In SPL Tecnology, pulses have enhanced efficacy over conventional forms.

    SELECTIVE PHOTOTHERMOLYSIS

    Définition

    When the light ray reaches the skin, a part of it penetrates the surface layers. It may then be absorbed by skin chromophores. When absorbed, it is transformed into heat. Selective photothermolysis is the specific action of heat resulting from light aimed at a specific target.

    Targets

    The main skin chromophores are melanin, haemoglobin and water. Each chromophore has a different absorption capacity depending on wavelengths used. Perfect wavelength selection is essential for selectively reaching a precise target.

    Parameters

    In addition to selecting wavelengths, exposure time and fluence (energy per cm˛) are two important parameters which it is essential to be able to vary independently if satisfactory results are to be obtained.
